9,000 Iraqis ‘disappear’ in US custody

Iraqi Vice President today questioned the United States forces over the fate of 9,000 detainees who, according to US army statistics, have simply ‘vanished’ from the face of the Earth [ Voice of Iraq, In Arabic].

Dr. Tariq Al-Hashmi pointed out that Iraqi Human Rights Ministry figures show 33,000 people being detained by US and Iraqi forces, but the army can only account for 24,000 of them.

“Such discrepancies call into question the fate of more than nine thousand people of Iraq detained brothers in jail for years without any legal or judicial procedures," he told Voice of Iraq. “But so far no one has responded to my inquiries.”

He demanded an immediate explanation from US commander in Iraq Gen. William Casey about the ‘disappearance’ of these 9,000 people, many of whom are thought to be innocent.

Dr Al-Hashmi also complained about the state of Iraqi prisons, some which are holding up to 10 times as many prisoners as they were originally designed to house.
