Govt abandoned civilians during Lebanon war, Israel PM admits

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert today accepted findings by State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss wich showed that the government abandoned the civilians during last year's Lebanon War, and promised to implement recommendations of the 582-page report.

The Home Front Report criticised Olmert's Cabinet and military leaders of Israel for pursuing a war against Lebanon whilst neglecting the security of Israeli civilians.

Olmert stated in press release that he "respects and esteems the impressive professional work that has been carried out by State Comptroller's Office personnel on the issue of handling the home front."

"The Second Lebanon War exposed gaps, shortages and faulty operating methods regarding the handling of civilian populations under attack," he stated. "A considerable portion of the gaps were created over many years."

But he was quick to point that lessons have been learnt and will lead to changes.

"Since the end of the war, the Government has greatly dealt with learning the lessons, changing priorities, defining responsibility and overcoming the gaps," the Prime Minister stated. "This process is well underway."

The war cost the lives 43 Israeli civilians, but Lebanon paid the higher price with 1,200 civilians killed by Israeli air raids.
