Catholic Church says "it's not right" to use condoms to fight AIDS

The Catholic Church in Kenya expressed its opposition to the use of condoms to fight HIV/AIDS citing that sexual intercourse is only for married couples, and it is not right to use protection.

A policy document released today at the Kenya Episcopal Conference re-affirmed a declaration by the Church in 1987 the only way to fight AIDS was for men to marry virgin brides, and not by "reacting" to the epidemic through "immoral" means.

"This is why the Church encourages everyone to live an integral sexuality which means behaving responsibly towards others and oneself," the Catholic Secretariat wrote. "Therefore, the Church does not promote the use of condoms as protection against AIDS because sexual intercourse is for the married alone, and using a condom does not make it right in other situations."

The policy document This we teach and do pointed out that some denominations were causing divisions in Christianity by promoting condom usage.

"Many clergy and followers of Islam as well as Christians of an evangelical persuasion tend to agree with our stance, even if reaching the same conclusions from very different backgrounds, and we need to work together more closely on programmes of both prevention and care," "By contrast, many Christian Churches of the reform tradition, with whom we usually dialogue and collaborate on so many issues, do not by and large share our moral convictions regarding sexuality and the condom, and this is a painful division between us."

The Church also hit out at international agencies, national governments and non-governmental organizations advocate the liberal use of condoms.

The document once again cited the 1987 declaration that such organisations are “prompted by the principle of the greatest happiness of the largest number of citizens, guided by the principle of utilitarianism and hedonism. [They] may resort to the unrestricted use of condom (whose efficacy, incidentally, is not infallible) and tacitly encourage promiscuous living. But this is not a question of protective condoms and clean needles only. We have to go to the sources of morality, do a bit of heart-searching, consider our attitude towards human relationships and how sexuality fits into that”

The National Aids Control Council said that the Church should not undo the good work done by HIV/AIDS groups.

"I realise that some faith-based organisations disagree with the use of condoms," NACC president Prof Miriam Were said at the conference. "We urge them not to vigorously oppose preventive methods that may benefit those outside their fold."

Kenya's estimated adult HIV prevalence rate was 6.1% in 2005, and it is one of only three sub-Saharan African countries that is winning the war against the epidemic that has devastated much of the region thanks largely to the uptake in condom use following awareness campaigns launched by NACC and other AIDS charities.

The "morality" of Christian believers

If there is anything more obvious than the incompetency of Christian believers to deal with the world on its own terms, it must be hiding in some priest's closet. They think it's more important to make children -even if born with a deadly disease- than simply to eliminate the disease. They want their members to engage in sex only when doing so makes a birth possible. It doesn't matter to them what the interests of the parents might be. This proves that such Christian believers do not have the interests of human beings in mind.

The idea that condom use is

The idea that condom use is less morally acceptable than allowing those with aids to propogate and die is disgusting, the Catholic church should be ashamed at this petit boeurgois morality. Why are the opinions of virginal elderly men who believe in a "sky fairy" cited as more ethical and valuable than those of the respected scientific community.

Despite good intentions, the

Despite good intentions, the Catholic church is allowing its beliefs to get in the way of effective solutions to the problem of AIDS.

I think it is time that they either adapt, or step out of the way. They are doing far more harm than good now.

I guess facts don't count for anything

"I think it is time that they either adapt, or step out of the way. They are doing far more harm than good now."

With respect to your opinion but the numbers and facts prove that it is you who are blocking the way.

"Strongly Christian Uganda continues to frustrate condom-pushing NGO’s by maintaining its abstinence and fidelity AIDS prevention programs and one of the lowest rates of AIDS in Africa, at 4.1%. Uganda’s population is listed by the CIA Factbook as 33% Roman Catholic and 33% Protestant.

Of African countries with low Catholic populations, Botswana is typical with 37.3% AIDS, one of the highest in Africa, and 5% of the total population Catholic. In 2003, Swaziland was shown to have a 38.8% AIDS infection rate and only 20% Catholic population."

"Despite different approaches, the reports all agree on at least one central fact: Abstinence and reduction in the number of sexual partners, not condoms, were the most important behavioral changes linked to HIV prevalence decline in Uganda.

A Global Leader
The results in Uganda are both startling and unambiguous: Uganda's Demographic and Health Survey of 2000-2001 found that 93 percent of Ugandans changed their sexual behaviors to avoid AIDS.8 The U.S. Census Bureau/UNAIDS estimates that Ugandan HIV prevalence peaked at about 15 percent in 1991 and fell to 5 percent as of 2001.9 As a 2002 USAID report states, "This dramatic decline in prevalence is unique worldwide, and has been the subject of...intense scientific scrutiny."10

Considering its limited financial resources, Uganda's success is even more impressive. America spends about 40 times more per capita on AIDS than Uganda spends on all its health care issues.11 Yet, in the United States, the incidence of HIV/AIDS is again rising, prompting health officials to warn of "a resurgent epidemic."12 The U.S. increase in HIV infection rates comes despite aggressive marketing of condoms and expensive anti-retroviral drugs--the treatment paradigm mostly ignored by Uganda."

Simply put, no one makes money with Abstinence. ;-)

The Celibate Church controlling the Copulate world

The Catholic Church is such a fraud. It is barren, boastful and base.

In all the Pharaoh's houses of Gold and Silver spread across the world, there is not one child or one mother or one wife to be found. And all these God-People with their teeming billions, cannot between them do a day's work, wash a baby or make love to a grown woman. This in itself must be something of a great obscenity. Imagine so many infallible ones -- none of whom believe for one moment that they could learn anything from making love to the other half of the world's population. Surely that must be the most extraordinary epistemologicall stupidity of all time!

As all the world knows the Catholic church, for all their tens of thousands of priests and nuns, refuse to make one baby between them. They are sworn against any knowledge or pleasure arising out of the ordinary intercourse of one half of the world with the otheer.

By design, therefore, they depend upon the CUCKOO theory of production and reproduction to keep the zillion-dollar charity- Empire going. The CUCKOO theory specifies that while the universal Catholic keeps his powder dry, the rest of the unrependent world of pleasure-seekers make whopee for them.
The Holy Roman then decides to enter everybody else's nest and steal the infant chics from their parents. This they do generation after generation. It comes under Christian education.

The idea of controlling fertility, therefore, is very close to the Catholic pocket. Third world children, education, conversion and control are the ways to recruit unsophisticated and uncritical and inexpensive labour.

This ,then, is the theory of how the inveterate CELIBATES control the unsuspecting COPULATES. The celibates are the ones who are the experts on women control, children control, sexual control, and moral control. The things that a gang of men can learn from keeping their power dry is phenominal.
