Bush nominates anti-education Nussle as budget director

US President George W. Bush today named Jim Nussle, the man accused of championing federal funding cuts for education while promoting tax cuts for the rich, as his the new Director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Nussle, a Representative from Iowa who led the effort to cut $12.7 billion from higher education, including the largest cut to the federal student loan program in its history while supporting f $958 billion in tax cuts for the rich, will have central responsibility for implementing the Bush administration's agenda in such areas as defense programs, energy initiatives and tax policies.

He is a strong a proponent of mixing religion with education, supporting motions giving federal aid only to schools allowing voluntary prayer and allowing school prayer during the War on Terror.

Nussle is considered an extreme right winger who has consistently opposed more more federal funding for health coverage while promoting the privatisation of Social Security.

Bush's nominee is does not believe in climate change and is against starting implementation of Kyoto Protocol, raising CAFE standards and giving incentives for developing alternative fuels.

"As a member of Congress, Jim was a strong advocate for fiscal discipline, and a champion of tax cuts that allowed the American people to keep more of what they earn," Bush said. "And as OMB Director, he will use his expertise about the budget process to ensure that the taxpayers' money is spent with respect and with restraint."
