Human rights activists, politicians, trades unions, NGOs, faith groups and campaigning organisations will gather at a rally in central London tomorrow calling for peace in the Middle East and demanding an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.
The event marks the 40th anniversary of the six-day war in which the in which Israel invaded and annexed the West Bank, Gaza strip and Syrian Golan Heights.
Speakers at the rally organised by the The ENOUGH! coalition will include Members of the UK Parliament, Members of the European parliament, Palestinian politicians, peace advocates and trades union leaders.
"We say Enough! We have come together because we want peace for Israelis and Palestinians alike. This can only be built on justice, equality and freedom," The coalition's mission statement says. "In order to achieve this goal governments like the British government must stand up for international law and human rights."
GREEN Party MEP Caroline Lucas, a speaker at tomorrows event who was recently voted the most ethical politician, renewed her call for an international boycott of Israel.
"Until Israel conforms to all previous security council resolutions and ends the occupation, stops building its 'separation barrier' - also unlawful, according to the International Court of Justice - and demonstrates it fully respects the rights of Palestinians, we must suspend the EU-Israel Association agreement, which governs political, economic and cultural links between EU countries and Israel," she said. ""Israel must end the occupation, and the UK government must renormalise relations with the Palestinian Authority - or life will get harder for Palestinians as poverty, human rights abuses and conflict steadily worsen."
"For 40 years Israel has defied world opinion and continued to occupy Palestinian land, including the sacred sites of East Jerusalem," actor and screen writer Andy De La Tour said. " For 40 years, Israel has denied Palestinians the basic freedoms of movement, education, employment, security or peace. And even now the US and EU governments continue to blame the Palestinians themselves for their own suffering. 40 years is enough!"
